New Affordability Funding Approaches

Effective April 1, 2025, Alberta introduced three new funding models for daycares, preschools, and family day homes (FDHs). These approaches:
-
Support the Canada-Alberta Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CACWELCC) Agreement.
-
Make funding more streamlined and equitable, with about 85% of daycare providers and most FDHs receiving increased support.
-
Ensure that child care remains affordable, high-quality, and sustainable for families across the province.

Flat Parent Fees

-
Full-time care (100+ hours/month): $326.25/month
-
Part-time care (50–99 hours/month): $230.00/month
-
These flat fees replace the Child Care Subsidy Program for children up to kindergarten age attending care during school hours.

Other Fee Information

-
Agency Registration Fee: A one-time, non-refundable $150.00 per family, due at enrollment.
-
Cancellation Before Placement: If parents register a child but do not proceed, one month’s fee must still be paid.
-
Statutory Holidays: Educators are not required to provide care but are entitled to regular pay. If care is offered, an additional fee may be charged directly by the educator.
-
Payment Methods: Cheques, post-dated cheques, or e-transfer are preferred.
-
NSF Charges: A $50 NSF fee applies to returned payments. Full payment must be made within three (3) days to avoid suspension or termination of care.
-
Absences & Vacations: Fees are still payable during absences or vacations to maintain the child’s space.
-
Notice of Withdrawal: Parents must provide 30 days written notice to the agency. Without notice, the monthly fee remains payable.
-
Tax Receipts: The agency issues official tax receipts annually for payments made directly to the agency. Payments made directly to educators are not included.
-
Financial Supports: Subsidy and Affordability Grant funding remain available for eligible families.
Holding Fees

-
Families reserving a space prior to the start date must pay a holding fee of $100 per month per child.
-
Holding fees are non-refundable if the family does not proceed with placement.
-
If care begins, the total holding fees are credited toward the first month’s regular fees.
-
Holding fees guarantee that the child’s space is reserved and unavailable to other families during the holding period.
